Many new homeowners are intrigued by the idea of having their thermostats upgraded to control the temperature in their homes. Thermostats keep getting more and more high-tech, and while this generally means better energy efficiency and money savings, it can be difficult to keep up with the latest and greatest thermostats on the market. There are so many options in the market that it’s a challenge to choose the best one for your home.

You probably heard about Wifi thermostats and smart thermostats and would like to know more about them. So we gathered all the information you’ll be needing before purchasing your new thermostats.

Both smart and wifi thermostats must be connected to the internet to work but they still differ in how they work. A smart thermostat can learn and make decisions for you and just like a wifi thermostat, it can be controlled by a connected device such as your smartphone via an app. When you talk about a wifi thermostat, this device can’t learn from your usage but it can only be set to perform specific actions in specific situations that are based on readings from a sensor.

A Wi-Fi thermostat can be set to send you a notice when your home drops below 70 degrees, from there, you can log in and change the settings of the temperature but the thermostat can’t do anything about your temperature settings on its own. A smart thermostat can be set to automatically change the temperature in your home at a certain time. Professional technicians say that all smart thermostats are also Wi-Fi thermostats, but not all Wi-Fi thermostats have all the smart thermostats’ capabilities.

If you’re planning to buy a new thermostat and considering an internet-connected device, most technicians would recommend the smart thermostat. Smart thermostats can do more and more importantly it’s going to give you more bang for your buck in the long run.

Smart thermostats are designed to make your life easier and more convenient plus it helps in saving your money on your energy bills. Once a smart thermostat is installed in your home, you can program it in any way you would like and let it do all the work for you.

But before you purchase your own, it’s advisable to have your HVAC checked by a professional technician to also see the compatibility of your HVAC and the smart thermostat. If it isn’t, you can either upgrade your HVAC system, which often helps with energy savings or skip the smart thermostat upgrade.

Another piece of advice we have for you is if you already have a wifi thermostat and would like to switch you may want to postpone it longer. Both are energy savers and the only difference is that you’re not able to do all the things that a smart thermostat does. So the switch may not be worth it.
