Refrigerators have been our companion in keeping our food safe and fresh longer. But our responsibility in maintaining it doesn’t stop on buying the appliance and stuffing food in it. Cleaning your ridge alone is a dreaded task for some. But it’s a must chore since we put our food in it. We actually recommend a thorough clean and maintenance every 3 months. Here are some tips on maintaining your fridge up and running smoothly.
Check the door seals
Over time gaskets wear and no longer seal the way refrigerators and freezers need to operate smoothly. The gasket is that rubber seal that outlines the refrigerator and freezer doors. A loose seal allows the cool air to seep out, wasting energy and causes your fridge to work even harder than it needs to, and that means higher bills for you. Your technician highly advises you to clean it periodically, about twice a year. First, make sure the seals are free of food residue. You can use a toothbrush and a solution of baking soda and water. You can check for its looseness by closing the bill in the door so that half is inside and half is on the outside. If it slips out easily, all your technician- you may need to have your gasket replaced.
Keep those coils squeaky clean
The purpose of those condenser coils is for removing heat from refrigerators and freezers. When those coils are covered with dust or dirt, your fridge won’t run efficiently. If you’re having doubts, you can phone up your technician and have it checked. Usually, this is done twice a year. Pull the machine from the wall to reveal the coils in the back or snap off the grilles the coils are located on the bottom front. Then, unplug the refrigerator, and vacuum with the brush attachment or a long-handled bristle brush.
Defrost and Deep Clean your fridge!
One of the things that we overlook is defrosting our fridge. Take note that when frost accumulates on the inside walls of the freezer to, let’s say, one-half inch remove the food from it, turn off your thermostat or unplug the unit altogether and allow all the frost to melt. But if your unit has self-defrosting features then you don’t need to do anything.
Once all the ice melts, you can go ahead and use warm water and a small amount of detergent to clean your fridge. This helps immensely in avoiding odors and bacterial growth in your fridge.
Set the right temperature and fill your fridge up
It’s very important to set the right temperature for your fridge. Pros recommend that your fridge is set to 37 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 0 degrees for your freezer.
Refrigerators need what you call “Thermal Mass” or lots of stuff (food) to maintain low temperatures. Cool foods and drinks help absorb warm air when you open the door. But if you’re the type who eats out most of the time, store a few bottles of water in there to keep your unit running.
The tips we gave you are mostly do-it-yourself, but keep in mind that you still have to ask your technician for help since they know these units better.
