Summer’s here and you know what that means? Yep, cooling yourself and your family to stay as comfortable as possible from the hot weather. But what if you’re also trying to save money and reduce your energy costs? We understand that you’re trying your best not to use your HVAC around the clock and the good news is there are still plenty of things you can do to keep your home cool. You might wonder since we are into maintenance and repairs for your HVAC, but we’re keeping it flexible since we know how important it is to save as much as you can for your family.

These methods are some of the best ways to cool your home without the help of your air conditioner.

1. Keep the Windows Closed and Covered

This is probably one of the most common pieces of advice to keep your room cool during the summer months but also underrated. For those of us who love the fresh air, this can be a hard sell to you guys but trust us, it really works. If the air outside is hotter than the air inside, keeping the windows shut will help the inside of your home remain a little cooler.

It’s also a good idea to keep your blinds drawn or your curtains closed, science would explain it- about 76% of sunlight actually enters the home through the windows that eventually turn into heat. We suggest dark curtains to keep your windows covered and to block out the sunlight completely. Some experts also recommend you use medium-colored drapes with white-plastic backing to reduce heat.

2. Change Your Light Bulbs

Incandescent light bulbs are known to give off heat by wasting 90% of the energy they use. That’s why experts recommend switching to LED bulbs or Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL). They make a difference in keeping your home cool, plus they are energy-efficient that helps in lowering the electric bill.

3. Shut and Insulate Your Doors

Close off parts of the house to keep the cooler air concentrated in a single area especially if you’re spending most of your time in one room. Closing doors can also help the room you’re using cool down faster and stay cool. Now, if you have doors with gaps at the bottom, you use some insulation or weather strips especially to those doors that lead outside of your home.

4. Use Fans Properly

Fans are a great substitute for keeping our home cooler without the use of the AC especially if you’re using it the right way. Experts say that creating a cross breeze with fans is one of the best ways to circulate cooler air. Find the coolest part of your house and angle the fan towards the hottest part of your home. This works by pushing the hot air out. Another hack here is placing a large bowl of ice in front of a fan to blow cold air into the room.

5. Let the Night Air In

It’s summer and this is a great chance for you to open the window during night time. It can save you money and it lets fresh air in during the night for better ventilation. Then you can close your windows again in the morning to keep the cool air in.

You can always find other ways to keep you cool during summer without getting shocked at how high your energy bill is. You just have to be creative about it. Let us help you in VCS Mechanical in terms of HVAC and refrigerator maintenance and repair if your need one.
